After School clubs are becoming increasingly important for a child’s development. There are many advantages of having your child join such a club whether offered within the school or in the local neighborhood!

In order to know more about the pros/cons, we recommend reading this article on ‘Pros and Cons of After school clubs’ that argues the same from both perspectives. The key message is that one should try to ensure that the clubs don’t become a baby care setup or a parking place for the children.

When parents look out for after school clubs, some of the key capabilities that they could be looking out for in our research shows the following in order of priority (note that this is based on limited research and this is only our opinion. Parents may feel differently for their own child):

  1. Team Work – Working with others
  2. Health and Fitness
  3. Creativity
  4. Problem Solving
  5. Using their initiative and innovativeness
  6. Independence and self confidence
  7. Social awareness, interaction & diversity
  8. Communication skills
  9. Knowledge
  10. Time Management

We did find that Discipline has not been on the priority list, however we believe that it is equally important in a child’s extra curricular activities. Karate can be a great source of inculcating such a trait!

At Sheknows.com, the same has been discussed with a different angle.

We also recommend reading this article by Ema Flanagan who has also discussed the Importance of After school activities.
